Bewitched Spell Book Halloween Centerpiece

So fun story, I don’t think it’s any secret that I love Halloween. In fact, it only comes second to Christmas in my book. I’m not your average Halloween lover. I decorate early most years. And I have to put myself on a budget for decorations or I’ll take the entire store home. And I’m not just into buying adorable vintage-y looking Halloween stuff off the shelf. I’ll make stuff too. (Or at least, arrange it in a way you can truly appreciate it). In fact this year I’ve already put together a DIY Dollar Store Spooky Appetizer Bar and showed you how for just $3 you can up your cauldron game. That’s the same reason why I wanted to bring this Bewitched Spell Book Halloween Centerpiece to you! It’s one of my most favorite Dollar Store Halloween crafts ever!

You see, if I was a millionaire I would probably have an entire storage shed devoted to Halloween. And I’m not lying. Not gory stuff, but fun spooky things. For instance, I’d love DIY a rat infested antique-y couch. Because that seems the perfect amount of extra. So pretty much, I just eventually want my house to look like a Halloween Storefront this time of year. That includes Halloween centerpieces and tons of Dollar Store Halloween crafts.

But I’m not a millionaire. I’m a person earning a decent income for my age. Which means that there will always be limited money and time. That’s why it was really important for me to make sure this Bewitched Spell Book Halloween Centerpiece was 1) relatively simple and 2) incredibly inexpensive.

To start the process I simply picked up a few things at my local Dollar Tree. Which really if you just take a gander the fodder for several Dollar Store Halloween crafts lines the aisles. I found a Halloween(y) looking book, some adorable orange mini lights and a packet of moss. I already had a packet of tea and some clear fishing line at the house.

For this to work, you’ll need to be comfortable mounting this somewhere on your ceiling. For me this was a light fixture above my table. But you can install hooks up there as well for this kind of thing.

Now after a lot of thought, I selected a few pages from nearest to the covers. I used an equal amount (because I didn’t really want you to be able to tell I had done this part. I used scissors to cut them in a very rudimentary way.

The next thing I did was to use a tea bag that I had dipped in water to blot the pages. After opening up the book halfway I blotted it on the first pages. Then I placed my hand in a cup-like shape to prevent the pages from being too crazy and I blow dried them.

You now have full permission to picture me makeup-less in a fuzzy pink robe hair drying a book in my kitchen like a crazy person. To say the least this project was a little comical, just ask my husband (God love him).

I continued this process with a few more pages on either side and eventually just the page boundaries and covers until everything was dry and looked aged.

The next step for me was to take the pages I had cut out and blot two or three of these a time with a tea bag. Then I placed these in a giant measuring cup (you could use a pot too, I just appreciated the tall size). I hair dried the crap out of them.

The next thing I did was to kind of arrange them how I thought they’d look best.

I was going for a moving spell book, so I wanted them to be a little uneven and look like they were levitating.

For the last step I actually kind of measured out how much clear thread I would need by looking at the distance from the book to the light fixture. I also allowed for slack so I could actually 1) stack the pages with more dimension and 2) tie it to the light fixture.

I taped the first page of the series down into the book so I knew it would be stationary.

Then I took a safety pin, because I have no needles in my home made holes in the following pages where I wanted to thread my translucent thread. (Ya’ll just thought I was some bonafide crafting professional didn’t you?)

Once this was all the way done I attached my thread to the light fixture above our table.

Now after this I was really struggling with getting the pages to sit just right. Knotting the translucent thread wasn’t working, so instead I used packing tape to provide support to each page so it would be positioned ideally.

Because I wanted it to look a little more magical I threw the mini orange tealights underneath some moss around the book.

You can even put a fan on it to make it seem as if it’s moving if that’s your jam. All dollar store Halloween crafts take is just a little embellishment to bring them to life.

I think this is a fun Halloween Centerpiece or just something great to put on you mantle!
